Frequently Asked Questions

What year levels do you tutor?

I provide one-to-one literacy and mathematics tutoring for students in Years 1–8.

What is Structured Literacy?

Structured Literacy is an evidence-based approach to teaching reading and spelling. It uses explicit, systematic instruction — particularly in synthetic phonics — to help students build strong decoding and encoding skills.

This approach is especially effective for students who are struggling with reading, have gaps in foundational skills, or may have dyslexia or other literacy challenges.

Do you follow the New Zealand Curriculum?

Yes. With over 25 years of experience in primary education, I am very familiar with the New Zealand Curriculum and ensure tutoring aligns with classroom expectations while addressing individual learning needs.

Where do tutoring sessions take place?

Sessions are available:

  • During school hours (by arrangement with the school)

  • After school

  • From my home learning space

Please contact me to discuss the best option for your child.

How long are sessions?

Sessions are typically [45–60 minutes — adjust as needed]. The length will depend on your child’s age and learning needs.

How often should my child attend tutoring?

Most students benefit from weekly sessions. However, frequency can be discussed based on your child’s specific goals and needs.

How do you assess my child’s learning needs?

We begin with an initial discussion to understand your concerns and your child’s strengths. From there, I use professional judgement and informal assessment to identify areas for focus and create a structured plan.

Do you work with children who have learning needs?

Yes. I have extensive experience supporting students with a range of learning needs. As both an educator and a parent of children with learning needs, I understand the importance of patience, clarity, and tailored instruction.

How will I know if my child is making progress?

I provide regular feedback and communicate with parents about progress, strengths, and next steps. My goal is for you to see growth not only in academic skills but also in confidence.
